Herne Bay Beaches

A string of exquisite little beaches line the shores of Herne Bay, one of Auckland’s most desirable and expensive suburbs.

Despite the real estate—the home that dominates Sentinel Road Beach recently went for $24 million—there’s an egalitarian feel to these charming gems and each has its own personality.

Hamilton and Cremorne beaches have the clearest water at high tide—but the sandy shore also disappears, so throw your towel on a low-hanging pohutukawa branch and jump in. Hipsters drinking craft beer pack into popular Sentinel Road, while Herne Bay and Home Bay have a little more room to move around and spread out a picnic blanket.

Western Park

Salisbury playground has a wonderful mix of equipment perfect for smaller children, particularly preschool kids or younger.

The swings and slides are just the right size for little ones, and there’s a sandpit and even height-measuring equipment so kids can check how big they’ve grown since their last visit.

There’s room for bigger kids to play or relax, as the bark and astroturf surface of the playground is surrounded by an open grass space perfect for games.

Salisbury Park is situated at the end of a cul-de-sac on Salisbury Street. On-street parking is available.

Point Erin Pools

Point Erin Pool is a historic facility located in the heart of Herne Bay.

The Point Erin Pools are only open during the summer season (November to March) as it’s a large outdoor pool.

Not only can you soak up the sunshine, you also get to soak up the views of the Harbour Bridge. Over the last 50 years, families have enjoyed swimming, relaxing and diving into a range of pools.

The iconic pool complex is the place for family fun during summer, with an outdoor competition pool and dive pool, hydroslides, spa, toddlers’ pool and family basketball court.
